An Invitation from Mrs. Hicks

Dear Families:

As you may be aware, Brownsburg Community School Corporation has adopted Everyday Mathematics for use in grades K-5. If you would like to learn more about Everyday Mathematics, please attend a Family Math Night on the dates, times, and locations listed below:

Thursday, October 28th at 6:30 pm in the Reagan Elementary School Cafeteria
Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:30 pm in the Eagle Elementary School Cafeteria
Thursday, November 4th at 6:30 pm in the Delaware Trail Elementary School Cafeteria

You are encouraged to attend one of these important meetings so that you can partner with us to improve your child’s achievement in mathematics. You will become acquainted with the Everyday Mathematics curriculum and math games that are an essential component of basic skill practice. You can also browse the Parent’s Homeroom on the UCSMP website at everydaymath.uchicago.edu for more information.

For the 2010-2011 school year, teachers and children began using this research-based curriculum, developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP). Everyday Mathematics reflects the state and national goals for mathematics and includes these features:

· A curriculum that explores mathematical content beyond basic arithmetic
· A problem-solving approach based on everyday situations
· Frequent, varied practice of basic skills
· An instructional approach that revisits concepts regularly
· An emphasis on communication and teamwork
· A commitment to home/school partnerships

In the past few decades, there has been a tremendous increase in the importance of mathematics in the workplace and daily life. In order to succeed in this information- and technology-oriented environment, our children need to gain a range of sophisticated mathematical knowledge. Everyday Mathematics is a program that will prepare our children for the future and enable them to achieve at high levels.

We are excited about Everyday Mathematics and feel confident this program will make the study of mathematics an engaging, enriching, and successful experience for all children. We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming Family Math Nights.
