We had a wonderful day at the Pittsboro One Room School. Our authentic living history experience took place on December 6, 1892. Even though I was one of the "older" students, I did try to sneak as many pictures as possible. Although, my zebra print iPhone looked extremely out of place! I was not able to photograph all of the students, unfortunately. I will take more pictures at our Pioneer Celebration on December 19th. Enjoy the pictures!

A special thanks goes to the Delaware Trail PTSG for paying for this field trip, so that students could attend free of charge! A huge thanks goes to Miss Elizabeth, our schoolmarm, and Mrs. Klimenko, Mrs. Vink, and Mrs. Russell, our parent chaperones. Also, I would like to thank EVERY SINGLE parent for helping your child dress the part and pack such an authentic lunch. As a parent, I know it was extra work for you to prepare your child for this field trip. Your efforts helped the children truly experience living history. I think this was a trip they will never forget!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7337060368043145730.post-48910282468230355972012-11-06T20:15:00.001-05:002012-11-06T20:15:10.738-05:00Happy Election Day!

Today our three candidates, Third Little Pig, Cinderella, and Peter Pan, participated in a mock debate. Mrs. Terry was the moderator! Each candidate did a wonderful job discussing the issues of national security, education, and the economy. Students learned about the election process in the last few weeks. The class was divided into three groups. Each group had to create their own political party, create party platforms, and campaign strategies. The three political parties were named the Peterpublicans, the Republicrats, and the Greek God Party. We learned about the real life election in a way that kids can relate to and with candidates that they know a lot about....Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Third Pig! Thanks to Brooklyn, Abe, and Jack for representing their parties well!
This week we learned all about the Scientific Method. In order to practice the steps of the Scientific Method, we did a messy, but fun experiment today. We wondered what would happen if we mixed Borax, cornstarch, and water. Students made a hypothesis and designed an experiment. After measuring and mixing, we learned that the materials form bouncy balls! I put on my lab coat, which was good because this experiment ended up being much messier than expected! My "Scientists in Training" put on their imaginary lab coats. 21 students, 1 teacher, lots of Borax, cornstarch, and food coloring came together to experience hands-on science!

Some scientists had discrepancies in their measuring that effected the bounciness of their finished product. Some scientists had amazing results! Everyone learned a lot this week and was shocked that I was allowing them to experiment and get their hands very dirty. Thankfully, the food coloring came off our hands easily. At one point, some kids had hands that were completely blue! These things happen in a scientific lab!

If any of my scientists want to do this experiment at home, here is the link with directions. This experiment requires adult supervision! http://chemistry.about.com/od/demonstrationsexperiments/ss/bounceball_2.htm
Today's "key" was visualization. I hope that your child can explain to you what it means to visualize while reading! We are using Hour of the Olympics to practice the seven keys to comprehension this week. Are you intrigued to find out about the seven keys? Check out this website for a quick description. http://www.delano.k12.mn.us/elementary-school/gradesstaff/third-grade/mrs-petersen/mrs-petersens-3rd-grade-class/keys-to-comprehension

Also in reading, we are beginning our first class novel of the year, The Hundred Dresses. This is a great classic with many themes that are relevant to the kids' lives, such as bullying and friendship.

Last week, students took the Scholastic Reading Inventory to assess their current Lexile level. By knowing their Lexile, the kids can choose books that are more appropriate to their individual reading levels. All this week I will be administering the beginning of the year DIBELS assessment to all of the students individually. This is a test that measures their oral reading fluency. These beginning of the year assessments will help me to see what your child needs help with in reading!

Many students have been digging into our classroom library and wanting to take home books that belong to me. This is okay, as long as the books are returned and not damaged! Our classroom is built on trust, so I trust the kids to be responsible with my books.

I am so excited about all of our great readers! By the end of this week, I am hoping that all of the kids will have a book selected to read for their Top 25 goal for August! I will also send out book order forms very soon.
Here is our schedule for specials.

Monday: Art
Tuesday: P.E.
Wednesday: Media Center/Computer Lab
Thursday: Music
Friday: Flex

I will always tell the kids what their special will be on Friday in advance, so they know if they have P.E. It is always a good idea to wear tennis shoes on Fridays....just in case Mrs. Terry forgets!

Also, we go to lunch from 11:50-12:20 each day.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7337060368043145730.post-15705783911851976962012-08-02T19:49:00.001-04:002012-08-03T14:49:09.449-04:00First Day!!!Happy First Day of School!! I can tell already that I am so blessed to have such a wonderful new class! Today flew by, and we were all beat, so I am sure there will be some sleepy kids tonight.

I hope your child told you all about their first day! The kids started out the day by filling out a sheet to help me get to know them. On the sheet they could ask me any question they wanted to about myself. That was fun! More than a few wanted to know my age and why I like owls so much....haha! We got to meet Mrs. Fowler, our new music teacher, today. After music this morning we learned a lot about classroom procedures and we organized all of our supplies. I read a book to the class about a crazy teacher named Mrs. McBloom who had a very messy classroom, and we all decided it was important to keep our room nice and neat. Mrs. McBloom had chickens hatching eggs in her cubbies, an apple tree growing through the ceiling, and many more unusual crazy things. I also started a read aloud with the kids that is very appropriate to current events.....the Magic Treehouse book, Hour of the Olympics. We learned that girls were not allowed at the first Olympics....boooo! One of our sweet second grade boys said that maybe it was okay now for girls to be there because it is safer. Ha! Another boy asked if the women just cooked and watched t.v. all day.....I reminded him that television wasn't invented back then! We are super excited to be kicking off an Olympics inspired Reading unit. In the coming weeks we will be learning different reading strategies and applying them to reading passages about the Olympics! Then......we took a test. It was the Everyday Math beginning of the year assessment. It was very difficult for the kids, but I reassured them that a pretest is not for a grade and only a tool to show me what they need to learn. After taking the math test, it was time for a brain break. We did a fun "getting to know you" type activity where kids got to use their clipboards (always a supply they are eager to use) and ask each other questions. The page they filled out came home tonight. I shared my "Me Bag" and assigned Me Bags for tonight's homework. Then we learned how to fill out assignment notebooks. What a busy day!!
This year, Ms. Whitton would also like for kids in my class to bring a glue bottle and a spiral bound sketchbook for the art room. If you go to the end of the documents at the link above, you will see the art room supply lists.
Today we learned about the phases of the moon. We recreated the phases using Oreos! Students had to be true scientists and resist the temptation to eat their supplies! Tonight students are supposed to go home and show their families the different phases with their Oreo plates!

Students were allowed to either glue their Oreos to the plate or take the Oreos home in a baggie (to possibly eat at home). Helen, like a true scientist, decided it would be better to glue her Oreos down to her plate. She was one of only two kids who chose to go that route!

Even though Logan looks very animated as he works on creating a waning gibbous, the room was actually silent! It is always my hope that your kiddos talk about our day and share with you the amazing things we do in class. I can't tell you how blessed I feel this year to share in the kids' joy in learning. Their joy is contagious and keeps me going! I am going to attempt to post some pictures on here to get caught up.....starting with today! I find myself so inspired by this particular group of students that I continually try to top myself on great lessons! After eight years in 2/3, I have learned to take a very integrated approach to teaching and learning. Brain research supports the importance of building connections. Today I think we made more connections in class than I ever have made in my life! We were all amazed at how everything we learned this morning was related.

As you know, we kicked off a unit on Nutrition with our field trip a few weeks ago. We are reading nonfiction text about the food groups. Friday we discussed dairy. Today we started our discussion with the protein group, then reviewed dairy and talked about how protein is found in milk. I passed out a carton of milk to each child. We examined the packaging and talked about the nonfiction text features like bold text, italics, different fonts, etc. Then we learned how to read the nutritional label. We have been working on persuasive writing and learning how to provide our audience with strong arguments. We made the connection that by knowing how to read labels properly, we can make strong arguments to our parents about why they should or should not buy a product at the store. (Sorry if this leads to some crafty persuasion at the grocery!!). After this discussion, I passed out sugar free pudding mix and we talked about having treats in moderation and about how sugar free treats are good options. We examined the text features on the pudding boxes.....then.......the kids found out that they were going to make the pudding and EAT IT!!! Okay....some of you may not realize how HUGE this was to the kids. We never eat in class!!! You would think I announced that we were going to Disneyland! This was exciting stuff for a Monday morning! Kids had to work in pairs to figure out how to make pudding only using 1 box of mix, two cartons of milk, and plastic spoons. The sugar free pudding was chocolate because it was leading to our kick-off of our Chocolate Literature Circles. The healthy chocolate snack would help us build our schemas or background knowledge in order to better understand our chocolate themed novels. Follow me so far? Basically, the connections just wouldn't stop!

Below is a picture of Allison and Jack working hard on mixing their pudding.

I know these kids so well that I predicted someone wouldn't want chocolate! Nate and Keenan were thrilled to work on their vanilla schemas instead! They mixed vanilla pudding and passed on the chocolate.

After making a huge mess in the classroom, along with a TON of learning connections, the kids sat in their Literature Circle groups to eat their snack and start making predictions about their chocolate novels. Below you can see Helen, Evelyn, and Leah deep in conversation about their predictions for their story. I love listening in on these reading discussions.....lots of great thinking going on.

In our classroom, we have a bulletin board called "I Can." Each day we write "I Can" statements on the board to set the objective for our lessons that day. Today we drew arrows to show all the crazy connections we were making! The kids are learning that they can do so many things!

So.....if your kid came home today and said, "We had pudding at school" but neglected to share anything else, now you know the full story!! After searching near and far, I finally found an Elf on the Shelf for our classroom! After much debate and discussion, the kids named him Nick. Each morning, Nick is in a new location. He only moves at night, using his elf magic. This morning, Nick was sitting all the way on top of the projector on the ceiling!! We thought maybe he went up there so he could get a better view of each and every student, so he could give a detailed report to Santa when he returns to the North Pole.

One thing is for sure....there is a lot of Christmas magic in the air!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7337060368043145730.post-89612104005063940142011-11-22T12:26:00.004-05:002011-11-22T19:10:06.688-05:00Shake, Rattle, and Roll!
Aiyanna works on adding heat to form her igneous rock. Along with several other classrooms in Brownsburg, we will be decorating our own small Christmas tree. The Christmas trees will be sent to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. All the trees will be judged at the end of this week, and the winner in each building will receive a treat for their classroom. This past weekend, I planned out the decorations for our tree, and I can't wait to have the kids help put it all together!

In addition to the tree decorating, we are collecting gift items for holiday care packages to be sent to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as to our Veterans at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. We would like to send a good collection of items with our tree.

This is where you can help!! Please send in any donations with your child by Friday morning. We have heard that the troops really like to receive candy, and instant coffee and hot chocolate packets. Here are some other ideas for donations:

Candy & Gum – Skittles, Starburst, Gummies, etc.
Snacks – Chips, Pretzels, Nuts, Beef Jerky, etc.
Individual Drink Mixes and Individual Coffee Packets
Puzzle Books
Large-size Wet Wipes/Towelettes
Reading Material – magazines, paperback books
Playing Cards, Foldable Frisbees, Hacky Sacks
Packaged Undershirts and Socks Motrin/Tylenol
Toiletry Items – Shampoo, Toothpaste, Soap, Deodorant
Chap Stick, Shaving Supplies, Lotion, Foot Powder
Cash Donations for postage accepted as well

This week I will discuss the meaning of Veteran's Day with the kids as we prepare our tree and care package for the troops!

Delaware Trail is having a special Veteran's Day convocation on Friday, November 11 at 9 am in the gym. Students are asked to wear red, white, and blue to school that day. I wanted to update you all on what our mathematicians have been doing lately.

Everyday Math:

Second graders are wrapping up Unit 2 in the Grade 3 Everyday Math book. They have been working on multi-digit addition and subtraction. The kids have learned some different strategies, such as the counting-up method, the trade first method, and partial sums. The second grade group has also been working on problem solving strategies. I have been so proud of this group! Coming next will be Unit 3, which focuses on linear measurement and finding area and perimeter.

Third graders are still working on Unit 3 in the Grade 4 Everyday Math book. They have been learning new mathematical vocabulary, such as factor, product, conversion, multiples, dividends, quotient, square numbers, etc. Students have been practicing multiplication concepts, and have been introduced to solving equations in algebra. Formal introduction to algebra in a 4th grade book may surprise you, but an early start in algebra is considered an integral part of the Everyday Math philosophy and is woven in to units beginning in first grade! Third graders were very excited this week because we got onto Google Earth and measured air distances between different locations around the world. If you haven't downloaded Google Earth, I highly recommend it. The kids are absolutely fascinated by it!

Everyday Math Questions:

Have you been wondering why the kids are learning so many different strategies in math? Have you noticed that many of our strategies are ones that we, as adults, never learned in school? Well, don't be afraid of new strategies! When children create and share their own ways of doing operations instead of simply learning one method, they begin to realize that any problem can be solved in more than one way. They are more willing and able to take risks, think logically, and reason analytically. If you are struggling with these new strategies, please remember you have access to an excellent free resource.....just go to http://www.everydaymathonline.com/ and choose "Free Resources." If you go to the section on Algorithms in Everyday Math, you can choose a grade level and find all of our strategies. There is also an animated section that shows great examples of the strategies with an audio that explains each and every step!

You may be wondering where all the math worksheets are?! Well, there aren't any for the most part. Students work out of their Student Math Journal each day and those pages are never torn out. Ocassionally, I will have students bring home those journals so that you can see what they have been working on and their grades. Not all pages are for a grade.....these pages are also used for in class discussions and practice. If your child ever brings this workbook home, it MUST come back the following day! You will see Study Links (Gr. 3) and Home Links (Gr.4) coming home. This is homework that is expected to be completed. However, Home Links are not graded because parents have the answers at home in the Family Letter that comes home before each unit. These Study Links/Home Links are key components to our math program because it helps the kids reinforce what they have learned in class, and helps you to stay connected to their learning.

What if your child already knows all of the concepts in a unit?? Students are pretested before each unit. If they receive a 90% or above on the unit pretest (which rarely occurs), I will put them on an alternative path for that unit that will broaden and enrich the concepts that they have already proven to have mastered on the pretest.

All of the students have personal logins for http://www.everydaymathonline.com/. Your child can login on the website from home to play all of the Everyday Math games that support our learning at school!

It is also very helpful for you to encourage your child to practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. You can use flashcards or online resources. Very few of the students have mastered their facts. Mastery is being able to correctly answer 45 out of 50 facts in three minutes.

Math is a highly interactive, busy time in our classroom. I appreciate the help from my math parent volunteers: Mrs. Meller, Mrs. Grant, Mrs. LeBlanc, Mrs. Cougill, and Mrs. Okuhara. Each day students are doing direct lessons with me, independent assignments for practice, and math games.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7337060368043145730.post-34812230018406620092011-09-26T22:07:00.003-04:002011-09-26T22:11:21.312-04:00A Special Invitation!Mrs. Terry's Wise Readers cordially invite you to our class production of Charlotte's Web. Our play will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 in the Delaware Trail Cafeteria on the big stage! Our days are extremely busy and I usually don't stop teaching until the very last possible minute. As I am sure you have probably noticed, some days (or multiple days), I don't get to sign the assignment notebook! This is because I am cramming in as many instructional minutes as possible! It is always an expectation that students make sure their parents get that assignment notebook signed. I do check it as often as possible! Here are some important things to know:

Classes no longer check out books every week, since we no longer have a full time media specialist. This week we will be checking out/returning books on Thursday. I will tell kids in advance when their check-out day will be. It is safe to just keep library books in backpacks, if you are a parent like me, and have too many things to keep track of already!

If you haven't turned in your Discover Indy books yet, please do so a.s.a.p! The fundraiser materials were due back to school last week.

Don't forget to collect box tops and Campbell's soup labels for school!

Study, study, study for Spelling! Tests are always on Thursday. Lists are always sent home on the Friday before. Practice in the car when you are going somewhere. Practice while you are making dinner or out at dinner. Practice!!!

Don't forget that Scrapbook Projects are due on September 26th! Only two more weekends left to work on it....

We are just beginning to really get into Social Studies and learning about communities and the history of Brownsburg. Right now we are building a lot of background info, and there are less grades to be had. We are not focusing on Science/Health right now, so there will not really be grades for now in those two areas. We do rather large curricular units in 2/3, like I explained at Meet the Teacher Night. This semester is heavy on Social Studies. Next semester is heavy on Science. No worries though.....lots of Social Studies grades are coming up as we dig deeper into our unit!

Speaking of grades......you have several graded papers heading your way! Sorry I haven't sent much home yet. Papers will be coming home throughout the week.

This week keep your eyes open for two things.....an invitation to attend a family geo-caching event hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Cash and a Scholastic Book Order.

Later this week, I will post some updates on curriculum and what all we are working on in the classroom!

I have said it once, and I will say it again......your children are WONDERFUL to work with! Each day is a joy and pleasure. Teaching your kids is my passion and I work very hard at making each day memorable for the kids.

Peace, Love, and Owls,

Mrs. T
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7337060368043145730.post-85149405198474209702011-09-02T19:05:00.003-04:002011-09-02T19:20:02.637-04:00GeocachingYour child may have come home recently talking about "geocaching."

Geocaching is "a real world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers called geocaches using GPS enabled devices and then share their experiences online."

Many families all over the world enjoy this hobby. The learning experiences with geocaching are endless. You can experience nature, build your geographical knowledge, and more. One of the students in our class is very involved with this hobby with her family. This week, Mr. Cash, came into our classroom as a guest speaker and told the kids about geocaching. He has purchased a "travel bug" for our class that is attached to an owl pin (of course!). The trackable owl will travel from one geocache to another as geocachers find it and move it. Throughout the year, we will check the location of our owl online. I am hoping to tie in many things from our Social Studies and Science curriculum as we explore this hobby as a class.

Soon, Mr. Cash and I are going to put out an invitation to all the families in our class to meet at a Brownsburg park on a weekend to experience geocaching together. This would totally be an optional activity, since it is on the weekend. Please do not feel like you have to become a geocacher, unless you truly are interested. The kids will be able to track our owl here at school. I do think it would be a fun learning experience if you are able to join us. Details are coming soon!!
I have added the link to the geocaching website where we will track our owl trinket on the class links on this blog. Let's see how far it travels throughout the year!! The name of our trackable is "Wise Owls" if you decide to explore the website and want to find our class trackable.

We are excited to embark on this unique learning adventure!
P.S. It is free to register on the geocaching website!!

There was also a strong earthquake in Colorado last night! Do you have a wise owl at home who is interested in learning more about earthquakes?

My wise O.W.L.S. (Outstanding, Wonderful Learners) learned how to fill out the assignment notebook today. The assignment notebook is in the O.W.L. binder, which should be in your child's backpack! Tonight, please sign your child's assignment notebook in the correct place. I will check for signatures in the morning.

When I post on this blog, I often put "secret words" somewhere within the post.....to make sure you actually read the post! :) Our first secret word of the year is SLANT. Ask your child what the letters in SLANT stand for in our classroom.

Have a great night! I will be out at two different soccer fields, so maybe I will see some of you!
Peace, Love, and Owls,

I hope your children came home feeling as excited as I did! Today we focused on procedures and routines for our classroom. Do you have the type of child who comes home and simply says their day was "fine?" Are you always wanting more details? Here are some words that we talked about in class that might be good conversation starters at home:

SLANT
tracking the speaker
O.W.L. language (silent seat signals)
two claps/three claps
hug or handshake
wise owls vs. sloppy pigs
clock appointment buddies
pencils for rent

Hopefully, the kids will be able to tell you what these things have to do with our first day! I could tell that my 23 scholars were ready to learn today! My favorite question of the whole day was, "Mrs. Terry, why do you have brown hair this year?" New year, new hair, I guess! ;)

I have one correction for my Meet the Teacher Night presentation and parent packet. Our lunch this year is from 11:45-12:15 this year....NOT noon, like I originally stated. (Thank you to the kind mom who pointed that out to me!)

I came home today with VERY sore feet, but a VERY happy heart! I told the kids that I could tell that I was surrounded by greatness today.

Please continue sending in those signed forms and school supplies, if you haven't already. Stay tuned for more news about our classroom!

Peace, Love, and Owls,
